On 22 October, Albert René Editions will release the 34th Asterix album to celebrate the character’s 50th anniversary.

The album titled L’Anniversaire d’Astérix et Obélix – Le Livre d’or (Asterix & Obelix’s birthday: the Golden Book) is being released simultaneously in 15 countries with a print run of 3.3 million copies (including 1.1 million in France).

More than 325 million albums have been sold since the character’s creation, with translations into 107 languages and dialects!

  • June 2006
    Release of the movie Astérix aux Jeux olympiques (Asterix at the Olympic Games), directed by Frederic Forestier and Thomas Langmann, which drew 16 million spectators in Europe.
  • April 2006
    Release of the animated film Astérix et les Vikings (Asterix and the Vikings).
  • 14 October 2005
    Publication of the 33rd Asterix album, Le ciel lui tombe sur la tête (Asterix and the falling sky); 8 million copies sold in Europe.
  • January 2002
    Release of the movie Astérix et Obélix: mission Cléopâtre (Asterix & Obelix: mission Cleopatra), directed by Alain Chabat, which drew 23 million spectators in Europe.
  • February 1999
    Release of the feature-length film Astérix et Obélix contre César (Asterix & Obélix take on Caesar), directed by Claude Zidi; 20 million spectators in Europe.
  • Spring of 1989
    The Asterix theme park opens in the French town of Plailly in the Picardy region; it drew nearly 2 million visitors in 2008.
  • 1980
    Release of Le Grand fossé (Asterix and the Great Divide), Uderzo’s first solo album (1.7 million copies).
  • 1977
    Death of René Goscinny.
  • 1965
    Astérix et Cléopâtre (Asterix and Cleopatra); 100,000 copies. First foreign translations.
  • 1961
    Release of the first album, Astérix le Gaulois (Asterix the Gaul), with a print run of 6,000 copies.
