In Moscow, the French music channel Mezzo has just been awarded Russia’s national Golden Ray prize for Best Music Channel in the satellite, cable and Internet television category. This was the first time the prize had been awarded in the history of Russian television.
The honour was bestowed by Russia’s National Association of Broadcasters with support from Europe’s Hot Bird TV awards.
The competition included 56 channels broadcast in Russia via cable, satellite and the Internet. Mezzo was nominated for Best Music Channel alongside four other channels: A-One, RU TV, La Minor and Bridge TV.
“We were thrilled to be competing in the prestigious Golden Ray awards in the category of Best Music Channel, and are proud of the high esteem in which Mezzo was held by the Russian jury,” says Emmanuel Génin, sales director for Lagardère Active’s Television Operations – France and Worldwide. “We will continue to live up to the expectations of Russia’s classical music and jazz devotees with innovative quality programming. Within the very near future, we expect to launch Mezzo HD, a Full HD channel with Surround Sound 5.1, and we hope to also have Mezzo HD available in Russia by 2010. HD broadcasting will significantly improve Mezzo’s quality as a music channel, since only the best images and sound can adequately convey all the passion and emotion of classical music.”
TiJi Russia and Gulli Russia both finalists in their category
For their part, TiJi Russia and Gulli Russia – both newly launched in Russia by Lagardère Active – were nominated and became finalists in the Best Children’s Channel category. The two channels, each the Russian-language version of a Lagardère French channel for children, made their debut in Russia on the NTV-Plus platform in the spring of 2009.
Top prize in the category was won by Telenyanya, a channel broadcast by Russia’s First Channel Worldwide Network.
Lagardère Active has a presence in the Russian television market through its channels Mezzo, MCM Top, TiJi and Gulli, all represented by Universal Communications.
Mezzo, the gold standard in classical and jazz music television worldwide, spans seven time zones and brings together more than 16 million home subscribers in 39 countries. Part of Lagardère Active, Mezzo is produced in partnership with France Télévisions and is available on cable and via Canalsat.
