2009: a year of renewed growth for Art&Décoration and Maison&Travaux magazines

2009 marked a return to growth for two historic home-decoration magazine leaders, with paid distribution in France of 238,006 copies (+2.4% - DSH 2009) for Art&Décoration and 178,600 copies (+4.4% - DSH 2009) for Maison&Travaux.

Art&Décoration confirms its leading position
Readers were treated to a new look in January 2009 with more coverage of a wider range of styles, an updated layout and new sections with more space devoted to contemporary interiors.

The success of the new look helped to drive spectacular growth in subscriber numbers (+60% on average, with 50,000 subscribers at the end of December 2009) and to keep single-issue sales levels high.

Maison&Travaux maintains a strong position

Although the property market is still struggling back onto its feet, Maison&Travaux has seen single-issue sales grow since summer 2009 and its subscriber base double in size.

The new editorial policy adopted in spring 2009 has emphasized the diversity and detailed information on offer in the magazine's in-depth feature articles and brought a noticeably more feminine touch to the reports and Idées Tendances [Current Trends] pages in particular. Every issue of Maison&Travaux offers expert information on new energy sources, room layouts and great renovation ideas.

The success of Art&Décoration and Maison&Travaux is expected to continue in 2010 with:

  • March's Maison&Travaux Renovation show, in partnership with KDRAN, at Paris' Porte de Versailles exhibition centre.
  • Both brands' appearance in bookstores in the spring with two new publications from the Société d'Informations et de Création: "Maisons en Provence, Maisons de Famille" on family homes in Provence, from Art&Décoration (192 pages, €25), and "Manuel de la Renovation", a guide to home renovation published under the Maison&Travaux brand (264 pages, €24.95).

According to publisher Philippe Khyr of Lagardère Active's Lifestyles division, "Lagardère Active's acquisition of Art&Décoration and Maison&Travaux in 2008 has given us the opportunity to build the most powerful home-decoration magazine division in France, based on our six print-media brands. Complementarity in editorial approaches and synergies created through dynamic marketing initiatives have borne fruit in 2009, enabling us to win market share and boost profitability in a difficult economic climate."
