Based on the book Femmes Artistes/Artistes Femmes by Catherine Gonnard and Elisabeth Lebovici (published by Editions Hazan), ELLES@CENTREPOMPIDOU honours women artists at the Pompidou Centre

On 27 May 2009, the Pompidou Centre opened a new exhibition that pays long-overdue homage to women artists from the early 20th century to today.

ELLES@CENTREPOMPIDOUis a new exhibition at the Pompidou Centre running from 27 May 2009 to 24 May 2010 that is exclusively devoted to women artists from the early 20th century to the present.

More than 500 works and 200 artists are represented, including such great names in modern art as Sonia Delaunay, Claude Cahun, Louise Bourgeois, Nikki de Saint-Phalle, Jana Sterbak, Annette Messager and Yoko Ono. The genres covered include painting, photography, architecture, videography, the plastic arts, filmmaking and choreography from around the world. The museum’s aim is to provide a fresh look at modern and contemporary art by paying homage to women, who only – and probably unfairly - represent 10% of all internationally-recognized artists.

This exhibition is based on a book by Catherine Gonnard and Elisabeth Lebovici, published by Editions Hazan in 2007. The volume traced an artistic current of the 20th century that saw the birth and blossoming of the notion of “women as artists” who expressed themselves in all fields from painting to sculpture, photography and video.
