The measures implemented by the CSR committee, in consultation with Lagardère's operating companies, in order to better control and reduce the environmental impacts of the group's activities, focus mainly on:
Lagardère Active and Lagardère Publishing's policy on paper management, and in particular:
- taking into account the environmental commitments of paper suppliers,
- Lagardère Active's actions to support lower grammages and smaller formats, the conversion of certain titles to a paperless format and the digitalization of certain magazines,
- the policy of limiting paper wastage during the manufacturing process,
- the effective management of the level of unsold goods, enabling us to limit the number of copies produced and destroyed, thereby reducing the consumption of paper and the volume of paper sent for recycling; to more effectively manage unsold rates, Lagardère Active regularly “adjusts” the quantities printed and delivered with the help of specialised software used by the Sale Directors of our titles. These activities enable us to obtain unsold rates significantly lower than the national average rate for unsold goods.
Management of printing processes:
all the printing of the group's magazines in France is outsourced to external service providers based on a list of criteria that includes their commitment to the environment (in particular in areas such as the use of hazardous products, atmospheric emissions and waste management). - Lagardère Publishing pursues a policy of raising awareness about environmental issues with its printers and encourages those who have not yet been certified to embark on the certification process.
Transport of magazines and newspapers:
Lagardère Active has drawn up a policy aimed at rationalizing the logistics chain in the production of its magazines in order to reduce its economic and environmental impact. - the main distributor of the group's magazines in France (the press distribution cooperative NMPP) has carried out distribution logistics optimization studies, as have those of the group's subsidiaries involved in press distribution in other countries; these optimization studies (which are repeated regularly) make it possible to reduce the distances travelled, in turn reducing fuel consumption and wear and tear on vehicles.
Management and recycling of unsold stock:
- NMPPs and Group subsidiaries responsible for press distribution activities abroad pass on unsold copies for destruction to recycling companies. In terms of books, around 20% of works offered for sale by Lagardère Publishing are returned by sales outlets; half of these works are sent back to publishers or selected to be returned for sale; the other half is sent to pulping plants for the production of paper pulp.
The environmental impacts of group sites, with, notably:
work related to reducing and/or optimizing consumption of various kinds, - work on waste management at the group's main service-sector sites,
- a specific environmental commitment with regard to the Croix Catelan site, which is an area of exceptional biodiversity with the implementation of an environmental management system and ISO 14001 certification.
