About Lagardere

Commitment to the environment

In terms of the environment, Lagardère understands the need to reconcile growth with respect for the environment.

We actively strive to limit our businesses’ environmental impact, with particular support for:

Responsible paper management, employing initiatives that include:

  • Taking paper suppliers’ environmental commitment into account.
  • Lagardère Active’s efforts to promote reduced magazine weights and formats plus the virtual publication of certain periodicals.
  •  Policies that limit paper waste during manufacturing processes.
  • Efficient management of unsold-merchandise rates by limiting the number of units produced and thus the number destroyed, thereby reducing paper consumption and recycling volumes.
  • Choosing printers for our magazines via criteria that include their commitment to the environment (particularly regarding the use of hazardous products, atmospheric emissions and waste management).
  • Lagardère Publishing’s policy of promoting its printers’ environmental awareness and encouraging their certification.
  • The recycling of unsold products.

Rationalized book and magazine transport, which involves both the Lagardère Active production chain and Lagardère Services’ press distribution.

Reduced consumption and waste: beyond our policies aimed at reduced, better-controlled environmental impact in our various businesses, since 2006 Lagardère has been committed – through its Matra Manufacturing & Services subsidiary – to the development, manufacture and distribution of electricity-powered vehicles (electric bicycles and lightweight electric quadricycles) in Europe.

We also maintain our commitment to Lagardère Paris Racing through the implementation of an environmental management system and ISO-14001 certification at its La Croix Catelan site.

In addition, Lagardère strives to apply the same environmental vigilance in the digital world that it has long practiced with regard to paper.

Focus :
Hachette Livre and Lagardère Active made a commitment to a carbon-accounting programme in 2008. More than just a chance to assess the carbon emissions generated by their company business lines* and create an improvement plan for coming years, carbon accounts help boost a sustainable-development “culture” within teams, which become strongly motivated and eager to contribute.

* France and French exports for Hachette Livre, and the press, radio, television and Internet sectors for Lagardère Active.
