Foundations

With their commitment to culture, community and education, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation and the Elle Foundation remain true to their values. Through their activities and programmes, the Lagardère group's foundations demonstrated that commitment on a daily basis in 2017, in France and internationally.

Bringing together creativity and cultural dialogue

In 2017, the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation awarded 11 grants (1) and a special writer's prize to creative young people, giving them the impetus they need to realise an original, ambitious project in the cultural and media fields.

The Foundation, fully committed to promoting cultural diversity, also forged closer links with the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA). Following on from the literature prize founded by the two institutions, 2017 saw the start of a monthly event hosted by the IMA to help people discover - or rediscover - the wealth of Arab literature, which is often denied the exposure it deserves.

The Foundation continued to support the Divertimento orchestra led by Zahia Ziouani and its academy, which are enabling several hundred young people to discover symphonic orchestra music, as well as the "Lire pour en sortir" charity, which makes reading a core part of the rehabilitation process for people in prison.

In 2017, the Foundation celebrated the tenth anniversary of its programme to help high-level athletes prepare for their subsequent careers, which it started in conjunction with Sciences Po and which encourages athletes to succeed and achieve new goals.

GRANT RECIPIENTS AT THE VILLA MEDICI

The Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation remains committed to fostering creativity by supporting a programme allowing artists and researchers to take up short residences at the Villa Medici – owned by the Académie de France – in Rome. In 2017, as it does every year, the Foundation gave three of its grant recipients the chance to spend one month at the Villa Medici.

In addition, the Foundation supported the Viva Villa! festival, a celebration of young contemporary art that takes place in Paris every autumn. The event, which features works by artists who have spent time at three prestigious residences – the Villa Medici in Rome, the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto and the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid – gave two of the Foundation’s grant recipients the opportunity to display their work.

ELLE FOUNDATION: SUPPORTING WOMEN FOR 14 YEARS

In 2017, the Elle Foundation supported 20 projects, expanding its presence to cover 30 countries alongside its partner charities. It also continued its advocacy work in favour of education and training for women and girls. Highlights included the publication of Girl Rising in partnership with Hachette Romans (Lagardère Publishing) – with Karine Guldemann, Executive Manager of the Elle Foundation, writing the preface – and the production, alongside Imagissime (a Lagardère Studios company), of the second season of “ELLES ont toutes une histoire” for France Télévisions.
